Information Packet

2013-2014

Dear Parent,

Welcome to O’Bannon Elementary School!  Please refer to the following information which will help you and your child transition into the new school year.

Breakfast

Breakfast is available to all students.  Please visit the School City of Hammond website (http://hammond.k12.in.us/) to see if your child qualifies for free or reduced lunch.

Dismissal

Please make sure that if you are picking up your child in a car, you display the paper with the child’s and teacher’s names in your passenger window each day.  The dismissal routine and signs will be mailed to your home as the school year approaches.  Additionally, if you have older children  going home with your child, please stress how important it is for them to get to the dismissal area on time. Please do not hesitate to talk to your child’s teacher if you have any questions about the pick-up procedure.

It is important that you make sure your child and the teacher know who will be picking him/her up.  If there is a change in your normal routine, please let the teacher know by note or phone call. We will not accept your child's word.  IF THERE IS SOMEONE WHO SHOULD NEVER PICK UP YOUR CHILD, PLEASE LET YOUR CHILD’S TEACHER KNOW AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!

Absences

If your child is ill, please call the school office (989-7360) and send a note the following day to school with your child. In case of serious illness or contagious disease, please report this information to the office and/or school nurse. You will receive a letter of excessive absences when your child misses 5 or more days within a grading period.

Office Pass

When you come into the building, you must sign in at the office and get a visitor pass.  The doors to the school are kept locked to help ensure your child’s safety. Parents are not allowed in the halls for any reason unless you have an appointment.

Homework

A homework packet will be sent home every week. Additionally, a family literacy homework project will be sent home once a month. If you are unsure if your child has homework or unsure of the homework directions, please contact your child’s teacher. Remember that homework is a vital tool to review what is being taught in class.  We expect it to be returned and a homework grade will be recorded on your child’s report card.

Gym Day

It is required that students have a separate pair of gym shoes that will be left at school for gym time.  No outside shoes can be worn on the gym floor. Girls are asked to wear shorts or pants on gym days also.

Supplies

Please send your child’s supplies to school on the first day of school or as soon as possible.  Please put your child’s name on all supplies and put them in a large plastic bag with your child’s name on it. The supply list is in this information packet.  Your child’s teacher might require additional items.

Money

When necessary, please send all money to school in an envelope with your child’s name on it.  Please label what the money is intended for (book order, popcorn sale, NUT Day, etc).

Field Trips

The number of trips we take depends on our school’s Title 1 budget. There will be a charge for most trips. Parents are welcome to attend, however due to limited space, parents who chaperone will be taken on a first come basis.  All chaperones and volunteers will be required to complete a criminal background check.

Allergies/Illnesses

Even if you have already informed the office, please let the teacher know of any allergies, illnesses, or medical needs your child might have.

Folders

Your child will be bringing a homework folder to and from school each day.  Please make sure that you check and empty the folder each night.  In this folder you will find your child’s work from the day as well as any notes that were passed out at school.  If you have any notes for the school, please send them in your child’s folder.  This will help cut down on lost items.

Snack

Your child’s teacher will contact you regarding their snack procedure.

Parent Helpers

Room parents are always needed to help with parties and classroom activities.  If you would like to help in the classroom or with parties, please let the teacher know. The School City of Hammond requires that all adults who come in contact with students in the classroom or on trips have a criminal background check on file.
